Both the Sport and FX4 models can be found customized in a multitude of different ways. The best interior fabrics are reserved for these models along with CD players, cruise control, remote keyless entry, and bucket seats. All of these models are offered in either regular, extended, or super cabs. The sport packages have specially tuned suspension systems made for the best highway performance possible. Off road packages were designed with raised bodies, custom Bilstein shocks, and specially geared 4 wheel drive systems. The FX4 is one of the most popular off road packages for the mid-size truck class.

2001 Ford Ranger trucks come with either a 2.3 liter four cylinder engine or a 4.0 liter V6. The smaller four cylinder is more than adequate for trucks with small bodies and only 2 wheel drive. For the best experience it is highly recommended that buyers look at purchasing a 4.0 liter V6 equipped model. All sport and Fx4 models come with the V6. The 4 cylinder engine comes with a standard 5 speed manual transmission and an optional 4 speed automatic. The V6 motors are only offered with a automatic transmission.
