Two different engines are used to power Jaguar's XJ sedan for 2010: a 5.0 liter AJ V8 naturally aspirated engine is installed in the base and XJL models, and a 5.0 liter V8 S engine in the XJ Supercharged, XJ Supersport, XJL Supercharged, and XJL Supersport. The standard 5.0 liter engine powers the car with a maximum of 385 horsepower at a rated 6,500 rpm. Four valves per cylinder torque deliver 380 foot pounds maximum at 3,500 rpm. The compression ratio for XJ's base engine is 11.5 to 1. Direct injection gives the engine plenty of power driving it to its top speed of 121 mph. The XJ with this engine is rated at 19 combined miles per gallon (16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway) and the XJL with this engine gets 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway for a combined rating of 18.
